About these questions. These are original Helix Math questions designed to practice skills commonly assessed on adaptive math assessments such as MAP Growth. Helix Math is not affiliated with or endorsed by NWEA or HMH, and these are not official MAP questions.

What to expect

Each grade's check is 14 questions and takes about 15 minutes. Your child answers on screen, finds out straight away whether each one is right, and sees a short explanation of why. At the end you get a summary by topic rather than a single score. Each grade page also shows sample questions with worked explanations, so you can see the style before starting.

Which grade should I choose?

Choose the grade whose material you want to practice. For review before a new school year, choose the grade your child just completed, since a fall MAP score leans heavily on the previous year's foundations. Grade labels describe the material, not your child's ability.

What these questions can and cannot tell you

Fourteen questions are a spot-check of one grade's material. They can show you how familiar skills are holding up and where an explanation surprises your child. They are not an official MAP test, and they do not produce a RIT score or a prediction of one: an adaptive assessment weighs question difficulty, not just how many were answered correctly, and a fixed 14-question set cannot do that.

Two children can also get the same questions right for different reasons: one from a solid foundation, the other one gap away from trouble. That difference between getting an answer and reliably knowing when to use a method is what we call fluent but fragile, and it is why the average hides the gaps.
