Sixth grade is the year arithmetic starts turning into algebra. Three things arrive that were not there in fifth grade: ratios, negative numbers, and letters standing in for numbers. Most of the year's difficulty comes from those three, not from the arithmetic your child already has.

Sample question 1 · Solve unit rate problems
Jamal can paint 2 rooms in 5 hours. At this rate, how long will it take him to paint 7 rooms?

Answer: 17.5 hours. Step 1: Find the unit rate: 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 hours per room. Step 2: Multiply by 7 rooms: 2.5 × 7 = 17.5 hours.
Sample question 2 · Use variables to represent numbers in expressions and equations
Let h represent the number of hours a plumber works. The plumber charges $35 per hour plus a $25 service fee. Which expression represents the total charge?

Sample question 3 · Understand measures of center and variation
The heights of five students are 58, 62, 60, 64, and 61 inches. What is the median height?

Answer: 61 inches. First, arrange the heights in order: 58, 60, 61, 62, 64. With 5 values, the median is the middle (3rd) value. The median is 61 inches.

What grade 6 math covers
Five areas, and they do not carry equal weight.
Ratios and rates. Comparing two quantities, and the jump from "3 cups to 2" to "1.5 cups per cup." Percent lives here too, as a rate per 100. This is the load-bearing idea of the year: seventh-grade proportions and eighth-grade slope both rest on it.
The number system. Dividing by fractions, which most sixth graders can do long before they can explain it. Then the number line extends left of zero, bringing negatives, absolute value, and all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
Expressions and equations. Letters begin standing for numbers. Writing expressions, solving one-step equations, graphing inequalities. Nothing is hard on its own. What is hard is that the answer stops being a number and becomes a relationship.
Statistics. Describing where data sits and how spread out it is, and reading dot plots and box plots. This is where "what is the average" turns into "what does the average hide."
Geometry. Area of triangles, volume with fractional edges, nets and surface area. The lightest of the five.
If ratios are solid and negatives feel natural, the year usually goes well. Those two are worth checking first.
What the right answers don't show
Two of the questions are the same skill underneath. One hands your child a ratio table and asks them to fill in the gaps, which most sixth graders manage by scaling the numbers already in front of them. The other gives a set of representations and asks which of them equal 25%. Same reasoning, no table to lean on, and nothing in the wording saying what to multiply.
That gap between knowing the procedure and knowing when to use it is what we call fluent but fragile, and a single right answer hides it completely.
A statistics question does it in reverse. It lists eight swimmers' lap counts and asks where most of the data sits, which a mean does not answer on its own, because the average can quietly hide what's really going on.
Is your sixth grader ready for fall MAP testing?
Most schools give MAP Growth in a fall window, often late August into September. A sixth grader's fall score leans heavily on fifth-grade foundations, fractions and multiplication fluency and early ratio reasoning, as much as on new sixth-grade material.

Choose the grade whose material you want to practice. For review before a new school year, choose the grade your child just completed. Grade labels describe the material, not your child's ability.
