Free 7th Grade MAP Math Practice Questions & Answers
Seventh grade is where math tips toward algebra, and one idea does most of the work: proportional reasoning. Percent, scale, unit rate and the constant of proportionality are all the same idea in different clothes. A child who sees that has a far easier year than one who learns them as four separate topics.

Sample question 1 · Calculate percent increase and decrease
A pair of headphones is on sale for 18% off. If the original price was $85, what is the sale price?

Answer: $69.70. Step 1: Find 18% of $85: 0.18 × $85 = $15.30. Step 2: Subtract from original: $85 - $15.30 = $69.70.

Which expression is equivalent to (6x + 9) - (x + 4)?

Answer: 5x + 5. Distribute the negative: (6x + 9) - (x + 4) = 6x + 9 - x - 4. Combine like terms: (6x - x) + (9 - 4) = 5x + 5.
Sample question 3 · Develop uniform probability models
A spinner is divided into 10 equal sections numbered 1 through 10. What is the probability of spinning a number less than 4?

Answer: 3/10. Numbers less than 4 on the spinner are 1, 2, and 3, so there are 3 favorable outcomes. Total outcomes = 10. P(less than 4) = 3/10.

What grade 7 math covers
Five areas, and they do not carry equal weight.
Proportional relationships. Whether two quantities are proportional at all, finding the constant that links them, and reading it off a graph as the point where x is 1. Percent is the same idea applied: increase and decrease, tax, tip, markup and discount.
The number system. Negative numbers stop being a concept and become arithmetic. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them fluently, including the rule most seventh graders can state and fewer can explain, that subtracting is adding the opposite.
Expressions and equations. Factoring and expanding linear expressions, and rewriting one to reveal something the original hid. Then two-step equations and inequalities, including what happens to the inequality sign when you divide by a negative.
Statistics and probability. Sampling: what makes a survey trustworthy, and what a sample can say about a whole school. Then probability, from "how likely is this" through to the odds of two things happening together.
Geometry. Scale drawings, circles, angle relationships, and surface area and volume of prisms.
If proportional reasoning is genuinely solid and negative-number arithmetic is automatic, eighth grade is much less of a step.
What the right answers don't show
Two of the questions are the same proportional relationship wearing different clothes. One is a table with a constant of 4 to fill in, which most seventh graders manage by multiplying. The other shows a graph of a pool filling and asks for the point that gives the unit rate. Nothing in that one says "multiply by 4," and children who breezed through the table often stall on it, because a table asks you to compute and a graph asks you to know what the number means.
A third is the quiet one. Headphones are 30% off, the original price is p, and your child picks the expression for the sale price. A child can find 30% of a number all day and still not see that taking 30% off is the same as multiplying by 0.7. That is where percent stops being arithmetic and starts being algebra.
That distance between getting an answer and knowing what it means is what we call fluent but fragile.
Is your seventh grader ready for fall MAP testing?
Most schools give MAP Growth in a fall window, often late August into September. A seventh grader's fall score leans heavily on sixth-grade foundations, ratios and dividing fractions and negative numbers, as much as on new seventh-grade material.

Choose the grade whose material you want to practice. For review before a new school year, choose the grade your child just completed. Grade labels describe the material, not your child's ability.
