Fourth grade is where the numbers get bigger and fractions stop being pictures. Multiplication moves to two digits by two digits, division starts leaving remainders that have to mean something, and decimals arrive for the first time, introduced as another way of writing tenths and hundredths rather than as a new topic.

Sample question 1 · Understand 10× place value relationship

Which of these numbers has a 2 whose value is ten times the value of the 2 in 1,728?

Answer: 8,233. The 2 in 1,728 is worth 20. Ten times that is 200, so the 2 must be one place to the left — in 8,233.

The price of a bicycle is $75. The price of the bicycle is 5 times as much as the price of a helmet. What is the price of the helmet?

About these questions. These are original Helix Math questions designed to practice skills commonly assessed on adaptive math assessments such as MAP Growth. Helix Math is not affiliated with or endorsed by NWEA or HMH, and these are not official MAP questions.

What grade 4 math covers

Five areas, and they do not carry equal weight.

Fractions and decimals. Equivalent fractions, comparing ones with different denominators, and adding when the denominators match. Then tenths and hundredths get written a second way, and your child has to see 0.7 and 7/10 as the same thing. That link is the year's quietly important idea.

Place value and multi-digit arithmetic. Reading, comparing and rounding large numbers, then multiplying two digits by two digits and dividing a four-digit number. Place value is what makes those methods work rather than being magic.

Multiplicative thinking. The shift from "5 more than" to "5 times as many," which is a genuinely different comparison and catches a lot of fourth graders out. Also factors and multiples, and word problems where the remainder has to be interpreted rather than dropped.

Measurement and data. Converting units, area and perimeter of rectangles, and angles: what they are, how to measure them, how they add.

Geometry. Lines and angles, classifying shapes by their sides, and symmetry. The lightest of the five, and often taught last.

If two-digit multiplication is automatic and decimals feel like fractions rather than a separate system, the year usually goes well.

What the right answers don't show

Two of the questions ask the same thing in different clothes. One gives four decimals, 0.7 and 0.07 and 0.77 and 0.17, and asks for them in order. Plenty of fourth graders sort those by reading the digits after the point as whole numbers, which puts 0.07 first and looks like carelessness rather than what it is. The other draws a number line split into twelfths and asks for 2/3 and 3/4 to be placed on it. There is nowhere to hide on a number line.

That gap between knowing a procedure and knowing what the number means is what we call fluent but fragile, and it is the crack that widens into fifth-grade fraction trouble.

One more is worth watching. It asks your child to compare 30,500 with 30,500. They are equal, and a surprising number of children reach for the greater-than sign anyway, because comparison questions have trained them to expect a winner.

Is your fourth grader ready for fall MAP testing?

Most schools give MAP Growth in a fall window, often late August into September. A fourth grader's fall score leans heavily on third-grade foundations, multiplication facts and place value and the first ideas about fractions, as much as on new fourth-grade material.
